Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns

Much activity occurs in and around the La Conner fire department during autumn: near the end of October, the volunteer firefighters host school-aged children and their families to the firehall garage for an evening of pumpkin carving and pizza.

Most started carving their jack-o-lanterns quickly and were elbows deep in pumpkin ooze and slippery seeds within minutes. Others more intrepid and who enjoy a slime-free experience sought help from more experienced carvers on site. The night’s Halloween chatter extended to the excitement of the upcoming PTSA Halloween Parade, where the volunteer firefighters lead the parade and provide traffic control for hundreds of children who swoon for sweets after an early release from school. The La Conner Firefighters Association opened the bay door to its historical museum and passed out candy to all who trick-or-treated.

A note of thanks to Gordon Skagit Farms for providing all the pumpkins needed for a creative night of carving.
